Bid for Lectures on Computational Linguistics 2024

L’Associazione Italiana di Linguistica Computazionale (AILC) sollecita candidature per ospitare
l’edizione 2024 delle “Lectures on Computational Linguistics”.

Le Lectures sono una iniziativa annuale di AILC rivolta alla formazione nel campo della
Linguistica Computazionale, e sono il frutto di una stretta collaborazione con l’alta formazione in
Università, in particolare con le Scuole di Dottorato. Informazioni sul format delle Lectures e
sulle edizioni precedenti sono disponibili qui.
Le sedi che si intendono proporre dovranno presentare un documento contenente le seguenti
informazioni:

  • Gruppo organizzatore locale: indicare le persone coinvolte nell’organizzazione locale
    delle Lectures, inclusa una persona proposta per far parte del Comitato Scientifico delle
    Lectures per due anni; indicare precedenti esperienze dei local organizers
    nell’organizzazione di eventi di formazione.
  • Caratteristiche della Sede: indicare la posizione della sede, numero di sale disponibili
    con la relativa capienza, spazi per sessione poster, presenza di attrezzature audio-video,
    possibilità di pranzo in mensa per i partecipanti.
  • Scuola di dottorato e corsi universitari collegati alla sede: indicare la/le scuole di
    dottorato coinvolte nell’organizzazione, gli eventuali corsi di laurea interessati, e il
    corrispondente numero di studenti potenzialmente interessati alle Lectures.
  • Caratterizzazione scientifica della Sede: indicare la caratterizzazione della sede (sede a
    orientamento umanistico, orientamento informatico o misto); indicare eventualmente
    alcuni temi scientifici che la Sede ospitante intende proporre al Comitato Scientifico delle
    Lectures, nel caso la sede fosse selezionata.
  • Alloggi: indicare la disponibilità di alloggi, in particolare a costi contenuti, per es., se
    presenti, studentati e strutture universitarie di accoglienza.
  • Evento sociale: indicare possibilità e costi per una cena o altro evento sociale.
  • Trasporti: indicare i collegamenti (aereo, treni) per raggiungere la sede; mezzi di
    trasporto urbani con i tempi per raggiungere la sede.
  • Budget: indicare i costi stimati relativi alle sale, i costi della mensa, e eventuali altri costi
    fissi richiesti dalla sede ospitante.
  • Sponsorizzazioni: indicare eventuali sponsorizzazioni da parte di istituzioni universitarie
    (dipartimento, scuola di dottorato).
  • Date: indicare le date possibili delle Lectures (tre giorni) nel periodo maggio-giugno 2024.

La selezione della sede ospitante verrà effettuata, in seduta congiunta, dal Comitato Scientifico
delle Lectures e dal Consiglio Direttivo AILC.
Le candidature dovranno essere inviate per posta elettronica al Presidente AILC (Simonetta Montemagni – simonetta.montemagni@ilc.cnr.it) e al Coordinatore del Comitato Scientifico delle Lectures (Elisabetta
Jezek – jezek@unipv.it) entro il giorno 15 ottobrebre 2023.

AILC per un’Intelligenza Artificiale responsabile e aperta

L’Associazione Italiana di Linguistica Computazionale (AILC) è l’organizzazione scientifica che riunisce la comunità di ricerca che opera nel campo della Linguistica Computazionale e delle tecnologie di Intelligenza Artificiale (IA) applicate al Linguaggio. AILC promuove la riflessione metodologica, teorica e sperimentale sul trattamento automatico della lingua e ne cura la divulgazione scientifica, con particolare attenzione alle ricadute sull’economia e la società.

I linguisti computazionali italiani sono scientificamente coinvolti, a livello nazionale e internazionale, nei più recenti sviluppi dell’Intelligenza Artificiale, in particolare dei cosiddetti grandi modelli linguistici, come quello alla base di ChatGPT. AILC mette a disposizione le competenze della sua comunità scientifica per contribuire al vivace dibattito attorno a ChatGPT, troppo spesso fuorviato da interventi disinformati, talora allarmistici, auspicando una formazione adeguata al riguardo, mai quanto oggi necessaria per l’intera società. Solo attraverso una costante attenzione critica e un uso esperto e responsabile di queste tecnologie sarà possibile sfruttare al meglio le opportunità offerte dall’Intelligenza Artificiale nel settore linguistico.
Nella consapevolezza che modelli come ChatGPT rappresentano comunque un importante valore aggiunto per le tecnologie di IA, AILC auspica che la comunità di ricerca nazionale promuova sforzi congiunti al fine di sviluppare simili tecnologie in maniera “open”, nel pieno rispetto della trasparenza scientifica, della
replicabilità dei modelli e degli esperimenti, della libertà di accesso alle risorse tecnologiche, e nella prospettiva di una adeguata formazione al loro utilizzo. Un’opportunità può venire dagli attuali significativi investimenti che l’Italia sta facendo nella ricerca in questo settore, come ad esempio il progetto PNRR dal
titolo “Future Artificial Intelligence Research – FAIR”, che ha la possibilità di offrire innovazioni fondamentali per la nostra comunità scientifica, per la lingua italiana, per il nostro paese.

New AILC governing bodies elected

During the General Assembly which was held in Milan on June 30th 2022 as part of CLiC-it 2021, the new AILC Association Board was elected, who will lead the Association for the three-year period 2022-2025. The Supervisory Committee laid out by the Articles of Association was also appointed to provide guidance. Good luck to the newly elected Board of Directors and Supervisory Committee! And a heartfelt thanks to the outgoing members!

AILC @ Festival di Genova 2020

On the 22nd and 23rd of October 2020, as part of the 18th edition of the popular science event “Festival della Scienza di Genova”, AILC will present a workshop entitled “Il linguaggio di Siri (The language of Siri)”.

Our activities are aimed at introducing high-school students to (computational) linguistics. Concrete examples of computational modelling of language tasks as well as interactive games will be employed to illustrate the opportunities and the limits of language analysis and representation.
The laboratory was designed and built by Ludovica Pannitto, Lucia Busso,  Claudia Roberta Combei, Mirko Lai, Lucio Messina, and Malvina Nissim.

AILC @ SISSA, Student Day 2020

On 13 February the Italian Association of Computational Linguistics participated in the Student Day of the International School of Advanced Studies (SISSA) in Trieste. Its aim was to introduce fourth and fifth year’s students to research in the field of computational linguistics and to its key role in technological advancement.

During the event SISSA hosted more than 500 students from various secondary schools in the Triveneto area. This annual appointment aims at making boys and girls discover the practical applications of science, thanks to the testimonials offered by its protagonists, the researchers, in one of the most prestigious scientific institutes on the Italian territory.

In this context, AILC proposed the interactive presentation “Hey Siri, what is computational linguistics?”, combining historical and theoretical notions regarding computational linguistics with a practical demonstration of the statistical properties of language.

At the end of the presentation, which was extremely successful, an informative session took place to introduce students to the educational offers of various Italian institutes and universities active in this area.

Thanks in particular to Gabriele Sarti for giving the talk on behalf of AILC at this event. We would also like to thank to the other PhD students and young researchers who contribute to the dissemination activities of the Association: Ludovica Pannitto, Lucia Busso, Roberta Combei, and Alessio Miaschi .

COLING 2016

Coling 2016, the 26th International Conference on Computational Linguistics, took place in Osaka from 11th to 16th december 2016. This edition reached a record in terms of number of submissions and participants, thus confirming the high degree of interest in computational linguistics on the landscape of international research.

The Italian community has played roles of highest importance in the organisation of the conference, including the general chair of the conference (Nicoletta Calzolari), the workshop chair (Monica Monachini), the tutorial chair (Marcello Federico), and the organisation of the workshop “Computational Modeling of People’s Opinions, Personality, and Emotions in Social Media” (Malvina Nissim and Viviana Patti).

A less positive remark. The presence of the Italian community, according to the data provided by the organizers, consisted of five accepted papers: not many when compared to those from other European countries.

CLiC-it and EVALITA 2016

The third edition of CliC-it, the Italian Conference on Computational Linguistics, and the fifth edition of EVALITA, the evaluation campaign of language technologies for Italian, which took place in Naples, were a success.

Set in the suggestive environs of the Accademia Pontaniana, the conference hosted more than 120 participants who enjoyed a rich scientific program including talks, posters, discussion sessions, and distinguished invited speakers, such as Joakim Nivre, Mirella Lapata and Walter Daelemans.

Our sincere appreciation on behalf of AILC,  especially to the local organizers, for making CLiC-it and EVALITA in Naples such a pleasant experience, and also to the event sponsors.
